National stakeholders are launching the Housing Election Forum and inviting political parties to present their commitments to reach 20% non-profit housing by 2050.
In the wake of a difficult July 1 for many Quebec families, the housing crisis stands out as one of the defining issues of the provincial election campaign. Faced with the urgency to act, the main political parties will be called on to clearly state how they intend to address the affordability crisis and build a lasting supply of non-profit housing.
In this context, ACHAT, CQCH, FHCQ, ROHQ, RQOH and UTILE are announcing the launch of the Housing Election Forum, a public event hosted by political columnist Josée Boileau. On September 3, the five main parties will be invited to present their vision, commitments and the means they plan to put in place to accelerate the development of a non-profit housing stock equal to the current crisis — and to prevent the next one.
This first edition of the Housing Election Forum brings together an unprecedented common front. Networks of cooperatives, non-profits and social economy housing enterprises, the network of housing offices, as well as various civil society and socio-economic organizations, are sending a clear joint message: Quebec must change scale. For several years, a consensus has been forming around a structuring target: raising the share of non-profit housing in the residential rental market to 20% by 2050. This ambition offers a lasting response to a model that has run out of steam, affecting vulnerable people, students, young families and a growing share of the middle class.
The Housing Election Forum will take place:
